SECRETS OF ACADEMIC SUCCESS

Scientifically speaking, every individual have the same number of brain cells, but the extent to which we utilize and put these cells to work is what matters. No one is born exceptionally brilliant, it is the collective work done on their part that made them stand out academically more than others.

It is the utmost desire of every student to come out with an outstanding result from the university. A lot of young folks came into the school with a very promising academic future and prospects. One thing you must know is that the university system is quite different from your secondary school settings. A freshman may experience some certain things like absence of assembly queues, all information and updates are pasted on the notice boards, free movement with little or no supervision etc.

A bright student may be optimistic about excelling academically but seeing the freedom of privacy enjoyed in the school, some of these students soon lose their focus and are easily carried away by peer pressure. This is not to say that you can’t excel while in school but there are a lot of distractions you can experience in school which if not properly checked would be disastrous to your academic pursuit.

These are some of the tips which I strongly recommend for your academic success.

PUNCTUALITY: If you would ever succeed academically, you must set punctuality to school as a priority. Being punctual to school is a major breakthrough in your academics. Punctuality in school encompasses but not limited to being present in classes, taking down notes while in class, participating in class interactions, having your assignments done timely, listening attentively while in class etc.
A lot of lecturers have adopted to writing tests, taking attendance or awarding a general mark for students who are in class to serve as a deterrent to those that plays truancy.

STUDY GROUPS: You must not overrule the importance of study groups. There are a lot to learn from peers who have the same academic motivation as you. It is very true that no man is an island of knowledge. Joining a study group avails you the opportunity to meet those students who are more knowledgeable, who can put heads together to solve that difficult test questions or even see who will put you through a difficult course. There are cases where the questions solved in your study group are what you see in the exam questions. The importance of study groups cannot be over emphasized as there are a lot you would probably gain from joining one. You can also make use of the school’s study facilities like libraries, e-learning centres etc.

AVOID DISTRACTION: Having some free and idle time at your disposal can easily get you carried away. There are a lot of distractions that you would experience especially from friends who constantly pester you with an invitation to parties, social clubs etc. that do not add anything to your academic. You need to have a study time table and follow it strictly otherwise, your education would be hanging down the drain. Never attempt to start any meaningless relationship with the opposite sex. A relationship demands commitment and time from both parties which can lead to having little time for yourself which is not good for your education. Choose your friends wisely and avoid unnecessary stack of friends.

TIME MANAGEMENT: Most students do not know how to manage their time properly. You must set goals for each academic session and try as much as possible to achieve your set targets. Learn how to manage your time by prioritizing your activities and never trade your time for any reason whatsoever. You should know when it is time for your study and when it is time for other activities. The ability to manage your time while in school is a great resource that you must learn.

CAREER GUILDER/COUNSELOR:  A lot of students went through school without knowing if an educational counselor exists. The truth is that you stand a lot to gain from the wealth of knowledge of these groups of people. They are professionally trained to be able to assist you when being faced with academic challenges, career path, emotional stress, moral advice, change of course and so on. When you feel that you are not showing your full potential in a particular department, you should endeavor to pay them a visit.
Being in a particular department is not the case here but are you happy in that department? Have your grades suddenly declined? Are you happy going to classes every morning? Did you feel depressed each time you are asked to take up a task? Did you find your attention divided when class is ongoing? Are you suffering from loneliness when in reality there are a lot of students in your class? If you answer yes to any of these questions, then it’s high time you visited a counselor in your school.

In all, you must acknowledge the mightiness of God in your academics. Try to have a great spiritual life while in school, do your best as a student and watch as all other things fall in your favour.
