Tips On Exam Success

As classes gradually draws to end, there are a lot of several social curricular activities going on in campus which can get you so entangled into its euphoria that you forget that exam is around the corner. Exam periods are one of the dreadful periods to a lot of students. Some students see it as a very boring exercise intended to make a living hell out of students while others see it as an avenue to express their intellectual abilities.

Nevertheless, one must write many rigorous exams before being awarded a college degree. Understanding what works for you and how your body chemistry relates with your environments gives you an edge from the pack.

In this article, I have enumerated some basic tips that you can apply in order to make you write and pass your exams successfully.

1. LOVE YOUR COURSES: There is hardly any motivation that you can get except self motivation. If you do not love a particular course of study, chances are that you would perform poor in the exam. It is the first approach to break free from exam fever. As you get to college, new courses are introduced and you are expected to obtain a minimum grade point before you can proceed to a higher level. In essence, what I am trying to say is that you must try as much as possible to give each and every courses the same amount of dedication. So, a rule of thumb is that you should give equal and undivided concentration to all your courses if you aspire to achieve greatness in your exams.

2. EARLY PREPARATION: One other important point to note is that you have to cultivate the habit of preparing very early as soon as the semester starts. A number of students often take this very important tip for granted which they most at times paid dearly for this singular indolent attitude. College works are always filled with lots of journal materials, research works, articles, scientific discoveries, experimental analysts etc. So, a student who desires excellent performance needs adequate and early preparation. Understanding a voluminous course work and noting important details can be a lot easier when you engage your course work from the onset. Do not be like the student who selfishly wants to fully grasp a full semester work in the nick of time.

In that way, you would not be doing yourself a great disservice. In essence, preparing early keeps you abreast of what is to be expected from each particular courses so that you can get the chance to ask relevant questions.

3.  NOTE TAKING: A student who intends to perform well in exams must be punctual to classes and be very attentive during lectures. As a student, I never realized how easy it was for me to cope with my courses until I started taking private notes of important details from my course lecturers! I also applied this same technique when I do my private studies. Some lecturers are fond of always dishing out rare details when they teach which ordinarily isn't in the course materials. When next you go for your classes, take a jotter with you, they come in handy. Listening attentively in classes is good but putting the details in ink and paper is better. What you hear can easily be forgotten but what is recorded stays. Learn this habit and with time, you'll be glad you did!

4.  JOIN A STUDY GROUP: It is said that two heads are better than one and that no single man is an island of knowledge. This is true but still it boils down to your individual ability. A study group is a group of people with like minds as yours who desire to perform excellently, coming together to jointly interact, help, motivate and discuss ways, techniques, solution that you can apply to achieve success in your exams using the course materials available and other relevant aids in the best examination practices. The first time I was invited to join a study group, I reluctantly agreed but I later found it to be helpful. I had my questions answered by my peers and I also had the opportunity to share my own views on some topics. It was like a mini class and it was fun. You should consider joining one. It helps!

5. PLAN YOUR REVISION: You can only succeed in school when you learn how to manage your time. Time is an important asset and you must learn how to use it for your own advantage. One important aspect I want to talk about is set your for revision timetable. A lot of students often make the mistake of studying throughout the semester without considering it necessary to revise. There is a kind of magic revision does to your studies. It has a way of refreshing your memory and making those little but important details stick. You would be surprised of how much you can learn from just the little period you spent in revising. It's like covering a whole course work in just some few moments. When you revise, be relaxed and do not fret. Take your time to go through your work taking note of little details.

Another aspect that I would like to state here and which I consider very important is revising with past questions. Try and get exam past questions from your senior colleagues or from the course lecturers and plan your revision  along with them. In my years of study, I found out that most exam questions are always a repetition or slight modifications of previous exam questions. A smart student should try and get at least past questions from at least the last three (3) academic years and check the mode or consistency of some certain questions. You should be able to deduce your focus path and also have ample time to tackle some other difficult questions. You should make it an habit to plan your revision with past questions and trust me, it never fails!

FINAL NOTICE: Be calm, do not let anxiety get a grip of you. Exam is not a monster and with utmost diligence to studies, exams are easily surmountable. Wash up, have a nice meal, gist and have quality sleep time. Doing this will make you mentally alert and physically prepared to face the exam.

Wish you success!
