NYSC ORIENTATION: ITEMS NEEDED IN CAMP

NYSC LOGO

Hello there! I know you are very excited about the much anticipated service to your fatherland after what seems like forever to come by. As you know, the National Youth Service Corps [NYSC) is a program established on the 22nd of May, 1973 after the Nigeria Civil war to foster unity and peace among the Nigerian youth. It is a scheme that aims to promote love and cultural tolerance in order to quell any hatred that has been propagated following the unfortunate incident occurred during the Civil war.

OK, enough of the stories and let's get down to business. As you are happily preparing and looking forward to resuming in camp, it is pertinent to note that there are items that you need to take along with you for the three [3) weeks orientation camp. After reading through this, you will be glad you did because by then, you must have done yourself a lot of good by doing what is right and avoiding unnecessary delay and trouble.

Need I tell you that in camp, everything you do which is not provided by the NYSC facilities must be paid for and the prices of items are usually inflated. Oh yes! Things ranging from using stapler to photocopy, eating in the infamous mami market, charging your electronic gadgets, washing your clothes to bathing etc are all paid for.

So, here is the list of items that you will need in camp and it is advisable that you get all these under mentioned items at home before you leave for camp in order to beat down cost.

Orientation in Camp

1. CALL UP LETTER: This is a very important document that you must not forget for anything in this world.  This is a vital document to indicate that you are not impersonating anyone. It would be submitted in camp.
* Please, do not ever make the mistake of LAMINATING it. There are cases where Prospective Corp Members [PCM) where not allowed into camp because of this singular mistake. It's good you save yourself from any unforeseen frustration.

2. FOREIGN STUDENTS: For students who schooled outside the shores of Nigeria, here are lists of what is required of you. Click here

3. STATEMENT OF RESULT/ SCHOOL TRANSCRIPT

4. FIRST DEGREE CERTIFICATE

5. SCHOOL ID CARD

6. GREEN CARD: The NYSC Green Card is one of the first documents printed out. It contains your bio-data. Print and bring it along to camp.

7. PASSPORT PHOTOGRAPH: Yes, this is very essential in camp. Apart from the ones you'll submit for registration in camp, you will also need it to register for programs such as skill acquisition groups, sports, bank account opening, redeployment, religious or social groups etc. Try to get as many as possible like twenty [20] and in a white or off-white background colour.
* In addition to the number of passport photograph, try to get at least ten [10] photocopies each of the documents listed above.

NYSC KIT: Your kit should contain one NYSC crested vest, one pair of khaki trousers, cap and jacket, two pairs of green striped stockings, two white T-shirts, two pairs of knickers, one pair of orange jungle boots, one pair of white converse and a belt.
It is advisable to come to camp very early so that you can easily get or exchange your kit with another person that has your size.
Seriously, it will be very funny when you are been given an oversized boot to wear.
*In addition, you might consider coming to come along with:

CLOTHING ITEMS:
Round necked White T-shirt
White shorts
White stockings
White tennis shoe
White rubber shoe
Casual wear
Rubber slippers or flip flops
Underwear
Bed Spread
Makeup and accessories

* Make sure that these additional items listed above are pure white.
*Avoid putting on any colour of underwear or singlet that would be too conspicuous.
* For the tennis shoe, it is advisable you get a white one or anyone with a faint striped colour which would not be easily noticeable. The white rubber shoe is easily cleaned and portable.
* You can take up to 2 - 3 casual wears for Sunday service and camp fire night

TOILETRIES:
Tooth brush and Tooth paste
Bath soap and sponge
Detergent or Bar soap
Towel
Tissue Paper
Perfume/Deodorant/Body spray
Comb/Hair brush
Hair and Body cream or Lotion
Sanitary Pads and Tampons
Bucket and Bailer
Bleach
Disinfectants
* You can get most of these items in camp but our idea is to beat down cost. If you want to travel light, then I think you can buy them at the camp.
* Some of these listed items may not be one of your priorities. So, buy only the ones that you know you will be using in camp.

OTHER RECOMMENDED ITEM
Mosquito net/Mosquito Repellent
Food flask and Cups
Cutlery
Torch Light
Clothe hanger/pegs/clips
Waist Pouch
Handkerchief/Face Towel
Wrist Watch

MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS
Camera
Internet-enabled phone
Richard Card
Battery and Power bank
Writing materials and Stationery
Novels/Books
Bible/Quran
Pillow
MP3/IPod
Paper gum
Stapler
* Some camps do not usually have constant power supply. The ones that have, the wall sockets are always faulty. So, you must go with a very good power bank or pay to get your phone charged.
* The waist pouch is used to keep all your personal belongings safe from theft. Make it your best friend and keep it wear it always even when you want to sleep.
* You will able to use your phone to kill boredom mostly during the day time when there are little or no activities to do.

MONEY: Never ever run out of money in camp. Bring as much as you can because it can help you go a long way and make your camp experience fun and stress free.

Once again, these lists are not exhaustive. You are free to add to or remove any item that you like before coming to but make sure it is not one of the banned items in camp.
Buying from home is cheaper but if you want to travel light, you may consider buying in camp.
